Dean vs Provost

After researching the jobs and responsibilities of both the provost and dean of a university, it has become apparent that the provost ranks higher in the campus hierarchy. A provost holds the highest rank at a university; they are concerned with issues that involve the curriculum and appointing faculty, while maintaining the integrity of the campus. The provost also supervises academic and financial planning as well as the expansion and future of the university. In contrast, a dean is usually in charge of a particular division of a university. A dean supervisors the students and has more interaction with the professors, along with other faculty members and students.

Compound Interest

Compound interest is useful while saving money. The interest rate that is given to you at the time of your savings deposit accumulates over the time your money is in savings. When you remove your money from savings the interest rate collected is then profit. For example say you deposited $10,000 with 10% interest per year. After five years your savings is now worth $15,000. That is a 50% profit from your original deposit, not to bad. However, 10% is a pretty generous interest rate usually they are much lower causing less of a profit. Compound interest encourages people to save their money with banks or investments by providing them with an incentive, accumulating compound interest and making some extra money!

Ideas for Paper!

Two ideas I have so far for my paper are:
-My friend was stabbed in the leg on campus last weekend. I am interested in what happened and how the police handled the situation. I would have to interview my friend, the police officers involved, and maybe other kids who saw the incident
-Why the keep the dorms so warm and how much the university spends on heating. I would ask the students if they feel the rooms are to warm. I would talk to housing directors. It might be hard to find out how much the school spends on heating because that is personal information

Thank you!
I'm sorry this is late I am in the process of switching roommates.

Open Blog

Throughout my high school years I really enjoyed my journalism class. Since 10th grade I worked on my school newspaper and by senior year I became editor-in-chief. This was a very nice surprise and I was honored to have received this title, it really led me to my future decision to minor in journalism at SUNY Albany. Throughout my three years in my high school journalism class I had the same teacher, she was so much fun! However, after three years I am looking forward to working with a professor who has a new approach to writing and teaching. Even though I plan on being a business major I feel journalism will be very useful in the business field, and in every day life. I am very excited for this course and for improving my writing skills!

How to Make an Idea a Bill

When a person wants to make an idea into a law in New York State they must first make a proposal to the State Assembly or to the State Senate. If the Senate or Assembly endorses the bill they make a proposal, an Assembly-introduced bill is labeled (A), a Senate-introduced bill is labeled (S). On few rare occasions both the state and the assembly agree on endorsing a bill, this is known as a Uni-Bill. Whichever chooses to endorse the bill then makes the proposal to the other branch (Senate to Assembly or Assembly to Senate.) A vote is then cast and the majority wins. The Senate or Assembly can introduce and pass as many bills/laws as they want within a given period of time, there is no limit.

John Merrill

As many great journalists know, plagiarism is a big no. Many would think that one of the oldest professors in journalism at the University of Missouri would know better. This is why a controversy was been sparked regarding John Merrill, a great journalist whose work has been published throughout the country. This past November, Merrill turned an objective article written by a student, into a column full of his own ideas about women's and gender studies. Yet, what raised the plagiarism flag was the fact that he used every quote from the article and did not give the original writer credit for the source of the quotes.
I personally believe that Merrill did not plagiarize. He used quotes; a quote has to be exactly the same because it is what the person said. I also feel it was inappropriate for a student to a attack an established professor, I feel that she over stepped her boundaries by making such a big deal out of the article. I feel bad for Miller that he was fired and that his name will be branded forever as being a person who plagiarizes instead of just being remembered as a great professor and journalist.

What is the Electoral College?

After doing a little research on the internet about what the electoral college is, I feel I now have a greater understanding of this aspect of our government. As most Americans know our government is based on the principals of democracy, the people chose who they would like to see in office. This power come to the people in the form of voting and in many cases the vote for a presidential candidate is the most important, the president is the executive leader of our country. So it is no surprise that this decision does not only sit in the hands of the American people, the electoral college also plays a major roll in deciding our next leader.
The electoral college is comprised of representatives from each of our 50 states, bigger states having more and smaller states having fewer representatives. So , it is key that the prospective candidates win over the bigger states with more representatives because this increases the number of votes from the electoral college. For example, if the state of New York has 70% democrats and 30% republicans, the vote from the electoral college is going to the democrats. It is with both the vote of the people and the vote of the electoral college that our country is able to function as a democracy.
