Dean vs Provost

After researching the jobs and responsibilities of both the provost and dean of a university, it has become apparent that the provost ranks higher in the campus hierarchy. A provost holds the highest rank at a university; they are concerned with issues that involve the curriculum and appointing faculty, while maintaining the integrity of the campus. The provost also supervises academic and financial planning as well as the expansion and future of the university. In contrast, a dean is usually in charge of a particular division of a university. A dean supervisors the students and has more interaction with the professors, along with other faculty members and students.

The provost isn't the highest ranking administrator on a campus. That would be the president. The provost is more like a vice president, in charge of all matters academic. The next rank of officials is the deans. And above all of them is a chancellor who serves as the top officials for the entire SUNY system.
